Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Peace in the DRC at SADC Extraordinary Summit
On 20th November 2024, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C, M.P, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, represented President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia at the Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government.
The Summit brought together key regional leaders, including Hon. Ambrose Lufuma, M.P, Minister of Defence, and Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, M.P, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security.
In his address, Hon. Haimbe highlighted the grave security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where ongoing conflicts have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement.
The Minister stressed the importance of a collective, sustained effort to bring about lasting peace, noting that regional stability is vital for socio-economic development across Southern Africa.
“The security situation in the Eastern DRC has affected millions, and it is imperative that we work together to resolve this crisis,” said Hon. Haimbe. “Peace in the DRC is crucial, not only for its citizens but for the entire region.”
The Minister pledged Zambia’s continued support for regional and international peace initiatives, particularly the Luanda Process led by His Excellency Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola.
He commended the vital role of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) in restoring stability and reiterated Zambia’s commitment to the mission’s success.
During the Summit, the Zambian delegation also participated in the Council of Ministers Meeting, the Ministerial Committee of the Organ, and the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit, reinforcing Zambia’s active role in regional peace and security efforts.
Hon. Haimbe expressed optimism that SADC’s unified approach would contribute to long-term peace and security, ensuring a stable and prosperous future for the region.
