FQM Kicks Off Distribution of Farming Inputs for 2024/2025 Season to Boost Food Security
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Trident has officially launched its farming input distribution programme for the 2024/2025 farming season, marking a significant step in bolstering agriculture and food security in Zambia.
The initiative, valued at K13 million, is aimed at supporting smallholder farmers with essential agricultural inputs to enhance productivity and strengthen resilience against climate change challenges.
The launch event took place in Kalumbila District and was attended by several dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Health Elijah Muchima, Senior Chief Musele Musonkantanda, FQM Trident Assistant General Manager Frederic Wouters, and Kalumbila District Commissioner Brenda Sankisa.
Minister Muchima praised FQM for its efforts in strengthening Zambia’s food security, noting that the initiative plays a crucial role in the fight against food insecurity. “By empowering farmers with the resources they need, FQM is playing a key role in strengthening agricultural resilience and driving rural development,” said Minister Muchima.
Senior Chief Musele Musonkantanda also lauded the programme, emphasizing its importance in improving local livelihoods. “This collaboration between government and the private sector is a clear example of what can be achieved when we work together for the benefit of our people,” he said.
The farming inputs provided to each farmer include two 50kg bags of Compound D basal fertilizer, two 50kg bags of Urea top-dressing fertilizer, and a 10kg bag of maize seed. In addition, FQM offers conservation farming training to equip farmers with skills to increase yields despite unpredictable weather patterns.
FQM Trident Assistant General Manager Frederic Wouters reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable development, stating, “We believe in empowering communities to become self-reliant. By providing farming inputs and technical support, we are not only addressing immediate food security needs but also investing in the long-term sustainability of agriculture in North-Western Province.”
The initiative will also benefit 40 schools in the region, with support including fertilizers, maize, groundnuts, and soya beans, aimed at strengthening school feeding programs and providing additional income for improved educational resources.
