Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Summit Opens with a Vision for Regional Collaboration

The inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit commenced today at the iconic Elephant Hills Resort in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The three-day summit, aimed at fostering regional collaboration on energy development, saw Vice President of Zimbabwe, Honourable General (Retired) Dr. Constantino Chiwenga, delivering the keynote address.

Dr. Chiwenga emphasized the critical role of energy in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

“We stand at the crossroads of an energy future defined by collaboration, innovation, and shared prosperity,” he remarked, highlighting the countries’ potential in renewable energy, particularly hydro, solar, and wind resources.

The summit comes as both nations seek sustainable solutions to meet growing energy demands and expand access to underserved areas. Vice President Chiwenga emphasized the importance of leveraging new technologies like solar mini-grids, energy storage, and smart grids to bring electricity to remote regions.

A notable highlight was the announcement of ongoing exploratory projects between the two nations, including floating solar and pumped storage initiatives on the Zambezi River and Kariba Dam. These projects aim to boost energy security and position the region as a leader in renewable energy.

The Vice President called for increased investment in energy infrastructure, highlighting cross-border transmission networks and industrial energy needs.

“To attract investments, we must create favorable environments and policies that support both public and private sector participation,” he added, advocating for innovative financing mechanisms like green bonds and public-private partnerships.

With participants ranging from government officials to private sector leaders, the summit sets the stage for transformative agreements expected to enhance energy resilience, regional integration, and economic growth in Southern Africa.

The summit will conclude on November 20 with action plans to advance shared energy goals.
