Zimbabwe Hosts Inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit in Victoria Falls
Zimbabwe and Zambia have joined forces to address regional energy challenges with the launch of the inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit, held at the Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls.
The event, attended by high-ranking officials, policymakers, and industry leaders, is themed “Powering Zimbabwe and Zambia’s Sustainable Energy Future: Unlocking Opportunities in Renewables, Grid Modernisation, and Energy Access.”
Honourable Richard Moyo, Minister of State for Matabeleland North Province, welcomed delegates, highlighting the region’s significant contributions to renewable energy, including solar mini-grid installations in schools and water treatment plants.
“This summit represents a bold step towards ensuring energy availability for all, addressing socio-economic barriers, and unlocking potential in renewable energy,” said Hon. Moyo. He also emphasized the province’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 7 and Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 to achieve universal energy access.
Key attendees included Zimbabwe’s Vice President, General (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga, Zambia’s Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, and the European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Jobst von Kirchmann. Discussions centered on innovative policies, sustainable projects, and leveraging partnerships to alleviate energy poverty in the region.
Matabeleland North Province, a renewable energy hub, showcased projects such as the Bemba Solar Project and initiatives supporting e-learning in rural schools. Hon. Moyo encouraged delegates to explore Zimbabwe’s renowned tourism attractions, including the Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park.
The summit, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Power Development in partnership with EnergyNet and sponsored by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), marks a new era of cooperation and innovation for Zimbabwe and Zambia.
