Hon.Chikote Calls for Bold Action to Drive Zambia’s Energy and Mining Sectors Toward a Sustainable Future

Zambia’s Minister of Energy Hon. Makozo Chikote, MP, delivered a high-level keynote address focused on policies and projects aimed at promoting Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and ushering in a new era for Zambia’s energy and mining sectors at the Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit.

Addressing key stakeholders, industry leaders, and policymakers, the Minister outlined Zambia’s commitment to a cleaner, more efficient, and stable energy future, both for industries and consumers.

In his address, Hon. Chikote highlighted the urgency of adopting forward-thinking strategies to meet the growing demand for electricity and resources, emphasizing that collaboration and innovation are critical to Zambia’s energy and mining future.

He noted that the first-ever Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), launched in December 2023, would guide the country’s energy development and position Zambia as a potential energy hub in Southern Africa.

The government, in partnership with key stakeholders, has been implementing several policies aimed at promoting IPPs. One major initiative includes expanding Zambia’s energy mix to include more renewable energy sources. With abundant solar, hydro, and wind resources, Zambia aims to reduce its reliance on hydroelectric power and enhance energy security by investing in sustainable energy projects.

Addressing the recent energy challenges exacerbated by a severe drought, Hon. Chikote outlined both short-term and long-term measures taken to mitigate the crisis. The Minister stressed the need for increased private sector participation to unlock new sources of investment, expertise, and technology that will drive the sector forward.

A key aspect of the government’s strategy is to modernize the national energy infrastructure. Through targeted investments in grid modernization, energy storage, and smart technologies, Zambia aims to improve system efficiency, reduce transmission losses, and ensure reliable power supply across the country.

The mining sector was also highlighted as a critical player in Zambia’s economic growth. The government has set an ambitious target of producing 3,000,000 metric tonnes of copper annually by 2035. However, achieving this goal will require substantial investments in power development projects and promoting the use of cleaner, more efficient energy sources in mining operations.

In closing, Hon. Chikote reiterated that Zambia’s journey toward a cleaner, more stable energy future requires bold vision, strong leadership, and decisive action. He called on all stakeholders to work together in building a sustainable energy sector that will power economic growth, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for all Zambians.

“We have the opportunity to lay the foundation for a new era of growth, innovation, and resilience in Zambia’s energy and mining sectors,” said Hon. Chikote. “Together, we can embrace the transition toward a more sustainable and prosperous energy future.”
