FAWEZA Commemorates Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary with Focus on Education and Empowerment of Women and Girls

The Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) has joined the nation in marking Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary, under the theme “60 Years Strong: Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future.”

In a statement delivered by FAWEZA Executive Director, Mr. Costern Kanchele, the organization reflected on the significant progress made in education and the empowerment of women and girls, while acknowledging the challenges that still need to be addressed.

Kanchele highlighted the government’s recent introduction of the Free Education Policy, which has significantly increased access to education for millions of Zambian children, particularly girls.

“This policy has been a game-changer, removing financial barriers to education from early childhood to secondary school,” he said. He also noted the continued expansion of schools and the recruitment of teachers as key steps in building a more equitable education system.

Despite these successes, FAWEZA remains concerned about several ongoing challenges, including high school dropout rates, especially among girls, and the barriers of teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and School-Related Gender-Based Violence.

Kanchele emphasized that overcrowded classrooms, a high teacher-pupil ratio, and a shortage of resources continue to affect the quality of education.

With over 100,000 teacher vacancies across the country and many classrooms far too large for effective learning, FAWEZA calls for urgent action to address these issues. “If these challenges are not addressed, Zambia’s education system risks falling short of meeting the needs of all learners, particularly those in rural areas,” Kanchele warned.

The organization also raised concerns over the hunger crisis caused by severe drought, which is threatening learners’ ability to attend classes regularly.

As Zambia celebrates 60 years of independence, Kanchele praised the dedication of educators, policymakers, and advocates who have helped transform Zambia’s educational landscape. FAWEZA reiterated its commitment to advocating for gender-sensitive policies and continued efforts to ensure that every Zambian child, regardless of gender or socio-economic background, has the opportunity to succeed.

Kanchele concluded by calling on all stakeholders to work together to build a future where every Zambian child is educated, empowered, and able to reach their full potential.

“Together, we can build a future that celebrates and supports the potential of every child in Zambia,” Kanchele said.
