Mokambo Border Post to Undergo Major Infrastructure Facelift

The Zambian Government, through the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, has taken a significant step to enhance trade by modernizing the Mokambo Border Post and upgrading the Mufulira-Mokambo road infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with Zambia’s vision of becoming a leading hub for regional trade and transportation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the Concession Agreement in Mufulira on November 15, 2024, Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, MP, highlighted the transformative nature of the project.

“This development is not just about roads or facilities but about fostering regional cooperation, reducing congestion, and enhancing economic growth,” he said.

The Mokambo modernization aims to alleviate pressure on the Kasumbalesa Border, a known trade bottleneck, and improve connectivity with neighboring countries.

In partnership with Jasworld Port Limited, the project will involve designing, financing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and eventually transferring the border infrastructure and 25.75 kilometers of access road.

Minister of Finance and National Planning, Hon. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, officiated the event, while Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Ms. Doreen Matambo, expressed excitement about resolving a “missing link” in the Ndola-Mokambo road.

This development is expected to reduce transit times, lower transportation costs, and create lasting economic opportunities for local communities while cementing Zambia’s role in regional trade.
