Govt and MTN Zambia Collaborate to Bridge Digital Divide with Affordable 4G Smartphone
The Zambian government has applauded MTN Zambia’s efforts to bridge the digital divide with the launch of the affordable Alola 4G smartphone, a move aimed at enhancing digital accessibility in rural and urban areas.
During the launch event in Lusaka’s Chawama township, Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, highlighted the phone’s potential to bring digital services closer to Zambians and enable them to access educational, governmental, and business platforms.
Hon. Mutati commended MTN Zambia for introducing the “cheapest smartphone on the Zambian market,” underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing telecommunications.
He urged MTN to conduct an educational campaign on the phone’s use to maximize its impact, noting that smartphone penetration in Zambia remains low at 36%.
“Today we are changing lives, today we have a game-changing phone,” he said, encouraging citizens to leverage the Alola smartphone to tap into digital opportunities.
MTN Zambia CEO Abbad Reda reaffirmed the telecom company’s dedication to empowering Zambians through digital access, emphasizing that the Alola smartphone design was developed in response to customer feedback.
“This launch signifies our commitment to addressing the needs of our customers by offering a smartphone that makes life easier and supports digital inclusion,” said Reda.
