Ministry of Technology and Science Prioritizes Cybersecurity and Digital Literacy at ABSA Hackathon
Zambia’s Technology and Science Minister, Hon. Felix Mutati has emphasized the government’s commitment to cybersecurity and digital literacy at the launch of the ABSA Hackathon, branded “Cyberthon.” This initiative aims to bolster cybersecurity awareness and skills to counter growing cyber threats.
In his keynote, Mr. Mutati highlighted that Zambia faces a substantial digital skills gap, underscoring the necessity for digital literacy, proactive fraud detection, and awareness training to secure the country’s cyber landscape.
He applauded ABSA for championing the hackathon and encouraged collaborative action among stakeholders to prioritize cybersecurity measures and digital transformation.
Mr. Mutati also revealed a partnership with Google to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence, set to launch later in 2024. This center will address cybersecurity needs while advancing Zambia’s digital economy.
He urged the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) to create culturally inclusive programs in indigenous languages, fostering cybersecurity awareness across communities.
The 2022 ZICTA assessment identified potential cyber threats valued at $2.3 billion, particularly targeting the banking sector, which underscores the urgency of initiatives like Cyberthon to reinforce cyber infrastructure.
Mr. Mutati announced plans to evolve the Data Protection Act into a Data Management Act, aimed at boosting investment and safeguarding economic interests.
ABSA Managing Director, Ms. Mizinga Melu, supported the Cyberthon’s mission, stressing the need for industry-wide information sharing on digital risks.
Representing ZICTA, Acting Director-General Nawa Samatebele, confirmed the authority’s commitment to building a secure digital ecosystem aligned with the National Development Plan.
