President Hichilema Celebrates 60th Anniversary of Zambia Sugar PLC

President Hakainde Hichilema graced the 60th anniversary celebrations of Zambia Sugar PLC today, commending the company for its remarkable achievements in the sugar industry and its contribution to Zambia’s economy.

Speaking at the event, President Hichilema recognized Zambia Sugar as a shining example of investment success, growth, and job creation in the African continent, with a global impact.

In his speech, President Hichilema praised the company’s innovative business model, particularly its outgrower scheme, which has empowered local smallholder farmers around Mazabuka.

“This scheme has become a critical factor in Zambia Sugar’s success story, and we encourage them to keep expanding this program to benefit even more farmers,” the President noted.

As Zambia also celebrates its 60th year of independence, the President emphasized that Zambia Sugar stands as a beacon of national progress. The company, one of Africa’s leading sugar producers, is known for both its production scale and its ability to adapt to modern challenges, including Zambia’s energy crisis caused by drought.

During the event, President Hichilema highlighted the company’s self-sufficiency in energy production. “It is inspiring that Zambia Sugar currently generates 40 megawatts of electricity to meet its own needs and plans to increase this capacity to 100 megawatts by adding 60 more megawatts. This excess capacity could be a significant contribution to the national electricity grid through ZESCO,” he said.

The President also posed a challenge to Zambia Sugar to innovate further, particularly in the area of molasses processing. He suggested that the company explore converting its molasses from liquid form to pellets, making it easier to distribute to the farming community for livestock feed.

In closing, President Hichilema urged the company to prioritize local job creation and contracts. “We’ve given this same challenge to other investors across the country. Zambia’s workforce must benefit from skills transfer, and local businesses should have more opportunities to grow alongside international companies operating here,” the President stated.

Founded in 1964, Zambia Sugar PLC is one of the leading sugar producers in Africa, with a strong focus on sustainability, community empowerment, and industrial growth. Over the years, the company has implemented initiatives such as the outgrower scheme to support local farmers, contributing to the nation’s agricultural development.
