Govt Signs ICT Statutory Instrument to Regulate ICT Sector
The Zambian government has officially enacted the Information and Communication Technology Association of Zambia (ICTAZ) Statutory Instrument (SI) Act of 2018, which aims to regulate the ICT sector by setting out general regulations and professional ethics.
This move is expected to address rising concerns around cybercrime and unqualified professionals operating in the industry.
The Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, emphasized the significance of this step, noting it as essential to restoring order and discipline within the sector.
He remarked, “This SI will help eliminate industry trolls and bring back public confidence.” Hon. Mutati reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the ICT sector, which he believes is vital for the country’s economic progress.
SMART Zambia Institute’s National Coordinator, Mr. Percy Chinyama, also emphasized the importance of ICT professionals adhering to the ICTAZ registration system.
He raised concerns about the growing negativity and disrespect on social media platforms, pointing out that the online behavior often witnessed does not represent Zambia’s true values.
Chinyama stressed that through the proper registration and regulation of professionals, coupled with addressing issues of online conduct, the industry could move toward ethical growth, helping drive digital transformation while safeguarding the nation from online threats.
