Govt and Zambia Chamber of Mines Endorse Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024
The Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, and the Zambia Chamber of Mines have announced their support for the Geological and Minerals Development Bill 2024, following a high-level stakeholder engagement meeting held today.
The event, organized under the Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF), brought together representatives from the Chamber of Mines, Mine Suppliers Association, Civil Society Organizations, Chambers of Commerce, multilateral organizations, diplomatic community, and policy think tanks to review and discuss the Bill.
The Ministry and the Chamber confirmed that the bill, which is crucial for shaping Zambia’s mining sector, will proceed through the legislative process, pending key amendments agreed upon during the dialogue.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive engagement, ensuring all stakeholders play a pivotal role in policy formulation. Dr. Hapenga Monty Kabeta, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, praised the collaboration, stating, “This process reflects the Government’s dedication to creating a business-friendly environment to drive economic transformation, job creation, and improved livelihoods.” He also commended the stakeholders for their active involvement.
Speaking on behalf of the mining sector, Zambia Chamber of Mines President, Dr. Godwin Mooba Beene, highlighted the importance of the PPDF framework in fostering transparent discussions, noting, “Today’s meeting is further evidence of the value of open dialogue. This collaboration will stabilize the mining industry, making it more attractive for investment.”
Both parties emphasized the critical role of continuous engagement under the PPDF framework, which they believe will contribute to creating a conducive environment for growth and investment in Zambia’s mining sector.
The event was witnessed by various influential stakeholders, including Dr. Sydney Mwamba, Executive Director of PMRC, further highlighting the importance of multi-stakeholder participation in shaping Zambia’s economic future.
