FQM Donates Beds, Computers, and Desks to Enhance Education in Solwezi District
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has donated essential learning resources, including 30 beds and mattresses to St Mary’s Special School, 600 desks for eight schools, and 70 computers distributed among 14 schools in Solwezi District.
The total contribution, valued at K2.5 million, is aimed at addressing critical shortages in school supplies and strengthening Information Communication and Technology (ICT) education in the district.
During a handover ceremony at St Mary’s Special School, Acting Solwezi District Commissioner Anthony Fulwe commended FQM for its long-standing partnership with the government.
“The donation made by FQM will significantly alleviate the shortage of supplies and enhance the learning environment for pupils, providing comfortable seating and sleeping arrangements. This contribution will also boost ICT education, a vital component for Zambia’s future development,” said Mr. Fulwe.
Kansanshi Mining Assistant General Manager, Axel Kottgen, reiterated the company’s dedication to empowering future leaders through education. “Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and we are committed to helping create that environment. St Mary’s Special School, in particular, inspires us with its work in supporting children with disabilities. We hope this contribution will make a meaningful difference in their lives,” said Mr. Kottgen.
He also highlighted the importance of the beds and mattresses, noting that proper rest is crucial to a child’s physical and cognitive development. “A good night’s sleep is essential for academic success and overall well-being, and we trust that these donations will help ensure that,” he added.
Sister Rajamani Arousamy, Head Teacher at St Mary’s Special School, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the school. “This support from FQM will create a more conducive environment for both teaching and learning. We are deeply thankful for this contribution, which will positively impact our pupils and staff,” she said.
Senior Headman Mulowanyama, representing Chief Kapijimpanga, praised FQM for its consistent generosity and encouraged the company to continue supporting local communities. He emphasized that partnerships between the private sector and the government are crucial for sustainable development in the Solwezi District.
FQM also reinforced its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments by leading a tree-planting initiative at St Mary’s School, promoting environmental stewardship. This initiative, led by Kansanshi Mine ESG Manager Arnold Malambo, aims to inspire future generations to actively participate in conservation efforts.
This donation follows other recent efforts by FQM, including the construction of a modern ablution block and water reticulation system at Mbonge Combined School. The mining company continues to uphold its core values — Smarter, Bolder, Driven, and Together — as it strives to make a lasting impact on the communities in which it operates.
