Zambia Calls for Enhanced Tourist Safety at Inaugural Central America and Caribbean Forum

Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba, has called for prioritizing the safety and security of tourists visiting destinations in Africa and the Americas. Addressing delegates at the inaugural Central America and Caribbean Forum (CAM CAF) held at the Paradisus Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Hon. Sikumba emphasized that tourism growth hinges on creating secure environments for visitors.

Leading a Zambian delegation that included Deputy Chief of Mission at the Zambian Embassy in Washington, D.C., Ms. Regina Boma-Phiri, Hon. Sikumba participated in high-level ministerial discussions which culminated in the adoption of the Punta Cana Declaration. 

This agreement solidifies the commitment of Member States from Africa and the Americas to promote South-South cooperation, focusing on cultural diversity, economic collaboration, and sustainable tourism.

Hon. Sikumba urged Member States to finalize “Tourism Doing Business” guidebooks, aimed at attracting investment in the tourism sector. He stressed the importance of open skies and improved air access between Africa and the Americas, while also advocating for visa exemptions to facilitate smoother cross-border tourism and investment.

“There is an urgent need to prioritize the safety and security of tourists as they visit various destinations in Africa and the Americas,” Hon. Sikumba stated.

The Vice President of the Dominican Republic, H.E. Ms. Raquel Pena Rodriguez, highlighted the significance of collaboration and enhanced air connectivity, emphasizing their role in the success of tourism initiatives.

Hosted by Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism and Chair of the Regional Commission for the Americas, Hon. David Collado, this forum marks a historic step towards strengthening ties between Africa and the Americas, paving the way for increased tourism and economic cooperation. The forum reinforced the shared history, culture, and future of both regions, encouraging stronger engagement through travel and tourism.
