Gov’t Pledges Ongoing Support for Older Persons
The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare of older citizens, recognizing their invaluable skills, knowledge, and experience.
Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Yolanta Malunga, assured that the government is prioritizing access to technology, education, lifelong learning, and information for older persons, while working to eliminate barriers of exclusion and discrimination.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Older Persons, themed “Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support for Older Persons Worldwide,” Mrs. Malunga emphasized the importance of creating an environment where senior citizens are respected and their contributions valued.
“Our older citizens are a national treasure. It is our collective responsibility to ensure their talents and wisdom are utilized while their cultural values are upheld,” she said.
She further urged the public to continue treating senior citizens with dignity and respect in every sphere of life, calling for collaborative efforts to enhance their wellbeing.
The International Day of Older Persons, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990, is celebrated annually on October 1 to honor the wisdom and roles older individuals play in society.
