President Hichilema Urges Africa to Embrace Digitisation for Development
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has called on African nations to invest in digitisation as a means to accelerate development and improve lives.
Speaking at the official opening of the 2024 Digital Government Africa Summit, President Hichilema emphasized that digital platforms reduce business costs and promote trade, fostering economic integration across the continent.
“Digitisation is key to making governments more efficient and uplifting people’s lives,” the president remarked, adding that digital tools provide immense opportunities for African countries to better serve their citizens and grow their economies.
The summit, held in Chongwe District, brought together regional leaders to discuss the role of technology in Africa’s development.
Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati highlighted Zambia’s strides in setting up an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence in Lusaka and developing a national AI strategy. The initiatives, in collaboration with Google and the Tony Blair Institute, aim to position Zambia as a leader in technological innovation.
Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Hon. Jack Mwiimbu also revealed significant progress in digitising government services, with 1.5 million Zambians registered in the Integrated National Registration Information System (INRIS), enhancing security and reducing costs.
In a major announcement, Visa Inc. committed $1 billion to advance financial inclusion in Africa. Visa Senior Vice President Aida Diarra stated that the investment will focus on improving financial access for underserved communities across the continent, further promoting economic growth.
