MOD Advances Solar Energy Integration in Military Cantonments

The Military Training Establishment of Zambia (MILTEZ) hosted a capacity-building program for senior officers on the installation of solar systems in military cantonments within the Ministry of Defence on 26th September 2024.

The program, held under the theme “Managing the Current Energy Crisis Through Solarisation,” emphasized the need for alternative energy solutions.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Ministry of Defence Human Resource Director, Administration, Ms. Millicent Mwenda, Permanent Secretary Mr. Norman Chipakupaku stressed the importance of solar energy as the most abundant renewable resource.

He highlighted its advantages, such as reducing operational costs and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

Mr. Chipakupaku said the decision to implement solar energy in military cantonments reflects the Ministry’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

“By integrating solar energy into our military cantonments, we are not only safeguarding our operations but also contributing to the nation’s energy needs and setting an example for other sectors,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary added that the training program is designed to equip senior military leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to oversee and implement solar projects.

He emphasized that the success of the initiative depends on the leadership and insight of the officers to champion solar efforts across the military hierarchy.

In his opening remarks, MILTEZ Commandant Brigadier General Hedon Mwilu stated that the move aligns with President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force Dr. Hakainde Hichilema’s call for Zambians to embrace alternative energy sources.

Brig. Gen. Mwilu noted the program’s importance in understanding the future of green energy in Zambia, including its financing, implementation, and associated risks.

During the training, facilitator Mr. Victor Mbumwae from the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) provided insights into how senior military leaders can operationalize the solarisation program.

The program was attended by key figures, including the Muchinga Formation Commander, the 2nd Infantry Brigade Deputy Commander, and various commanding officers from MILTEZ, Zambia National Service, and other military units.
