Malawi Tobacco Earnings Surge Despite Drought

Malawi’s tobacco industry saw a 40% increase in earnings during the 2024 marketing season despite facing an El Niño-induced drought. 

According to the Tobacco Commission, revenue rose to $396.28 million, compared to $283.76 million in the previous season.

The Tobacco Commission attributed the boost to increased sales volumes, with 133.1 million kilograms sold, up from 120.5 million kilograms.

“The increase in sales volume, revenue, and average price per kilogram indicates a strong and positive performance,” the Commission stated in its final report.

Despite the drought affecting much of Malawi’s agriculture, including the staple maize crop, tobacco proved resilient. 

Limbani Kakhome, a spokesperson for Japan Tobacco Leaf, highlighted that global demand remained strong due to adverse weather conditions in other major producing countries.

Malawi’s tobacco sector continues to play a crucial role in its economy, capitalizing on favorable international market conditions.
