US Pledges Stronger Defence Cooperation with ZNS
The newly appointed United States Defence Attaché to Zambia, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Yan, has reaffirmed the US’s commitment to deepening military cooperation with the Zambia National Service (ZNS).
Lt Col Yan, during a courtesy call on ZNS Commander Lieutenant General (Eng) Maliti Solochi II at ZNS Headquarters last week, emphasized the importance of strengthening the bilateral defence partnership between the two nations.
In his remarks, Lt Col Yan highlighted that his office would work closely with the ZNS to explore new avenues for cooperation aimed at enhancing the military capabilities of ZNS officers. The focus will be on strategic areas that address Zambia’s national security needs.
Training and capacity-building programs will be prioritized to empower ZNS personnel with the necessary skills to respond effectively to emerging security challenges.
“We are eager to elevate our bilateral relations, which will not only benefit our people but also solidify the bonds of friendship between our two nations over the next three years,” Lt Col Yan said. He also pledged ongoing support to help modernize ZNS activities, enhance capacity, and ensure the Institution efficiently fulfils its mandate.
Lt Gen Solochi, in his welcoming remarks, expressed deep appreciation for the enduring partnership between Zambia and the US, particularly in the area of military training. He pointed to the successful training of Zambian officers in the US as a testament to the two nations’ robust defence ties.
He further underscored the vital role that the US has played through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has provided crucial assistance to ZNS in the form of hospitals and medical supplies.
“America has been a steadfast partner to Zambia and ZNS, providing substantial assistance through PEPFAR, including the construction of vital health facilities and the provision of essential medicines,” Lt Gen Solochi said.
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing US-Zambia defence cooperation, with Lt Gen Solochi vowing to work closely with Lt Col Yan to advance shared interests and strengthen the partnership further.
