Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Collaboration with the UN on Green Economy and Climate Action
Zambia remains dedicated to working closely with the United Nations to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable development, according to Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Mposha.
During a meeting with the UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. James Wakiaga, Hon. Mposha highlighted the longstanding partnership between Zambia and the UN, particularly in addressing climate change and safeguarding natural resources.
Hon. Mposha praised UNDP for its support in launching Zambia’s “Green Growth Strategy” and ongoing efforts to revise the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) framework.
He expressed appreciation for the UN’s role in mobilizing support for Zambia’s drought response, particularly as the country prepares for COP 29 in Azerbaijan.
“Our government has prioritized renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity conservation to ensure a sustainable future,” Hon. Mposha said.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change, deforestation, and pollution, while also viewing them as opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
UNDP Resident Representative Mr. James Wakiaga echoed the commitment to Zambia’s climate initiatives, announcing US$150,000 in support for NDC stock-taking efforts to assess progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr. Wakiaga also emphasized the importance of improving early warning systems and infrastructure to ensure timely climate information reaches farming communities.
UNDP remains a key partner in Zambia’s green growth journey, providing financial and technical support for renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience initiatives.
