Hon. Mposha Commends ABSA Bank for Pioneering Health and Environmental Initiatives
Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Mposha, has expressed gratitude to ABSA Bank for its continued commitment to promoting health and environmental sustainability through initiatives like the ABSA Marathon.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by ABSA Bank PLC Chief Executive Officer Ms. Mizinga Melu, Hon. Mposha praised the bank for pioneering keep-fit programs that align with the country’s fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The Minister confirmed that his Ministry will participate in the upcoming ABSA Marathon, set for Saturday, 7th September 2024, underscoring the importance of a healthy workforce in boosting national productivity.
Hon. Mposha also highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, noting the severe impacts being felt across Zambia, including droughts exacerbated by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon.
He acknowledged ABSA Bank’s efforts in combating climate change, including its partnership with the Forestry Department and ZAFFICO PLC to promote tree planting and environmental conservation.
The Minister lauded ABSA’s support for Zambia’s participation in the United Nations Conference of Parties (UN-COP), which aligns with global climate commitments like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
He urged other financial institutions to follow ABSA’s example, emphasizing the importance of aligning business strategies with climate and environmental sustainability.
Hon. Mposha further called for expanded collaboration in areas such as the Carbon Market and financing green innovations in sectors like energy, agriculture, and water.
He proposed partnerships for promoting Electric Vehicles, suggesting that sponsors could brand these vehicles for use by the Ministry to raise awareness about sustainable transportation.
In response, ABSA Bank CEO Ms. Mizinga Melu reiterated the bank’s commitment to raising awareness on climate change and exploring ways to contribute to mitigating its effects.
She emphasized ABSA’s dedication to supporting initiatives that promote a sustainable environment, ensuring benefits for both business and society.
