Minister Mulenga Unveils Equipment at Mulungushi Textiles Limited to Begin Plant Operationalization
Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry Hon. Chipoka Mulenga today has unveiled new equipment at Mulungushi Textiles Limited, marking the start of the plant’s operational phase.
This move is expected to significantly contribute to Zambia’s economic growth and advance the economic transformation agenda.
Hon. Mulenga highlighted that the revitalization of Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles Limited aligns with the government’s Eight National Development Plan. The development will be executed in four phases:
- Printing Fabrics and Garments: An investment of USD 20 million.
- 20MW Solar Plant: A USD 20 million investment to supply power to Mulungushi Textiles and the national grid.
- Solar Panel Assembly Plant: An estimated investment of USD 50 million.
- Spinning Facility: A major investment of USD 80 million.
The government anticipates the arrival of approximately 400 containers with machinery and equipment from China, currently in transit. Mulungushi Textiles Limited plans to create around 500 jobs this year and generate business opportunities through out-grower schemes for over 50,000 small-scale farmers in Central Province.
Hon. Mulenga emphasized that key interventions facilitating this revitalization include the Investment, Trade and Business Development Act No. 18 of 2022, which expanded investment incentives to rural areas.
He noted that the government has implemented various measures to support citizens by creating business and job opportunities.
This initiative exemplifies the success of government interventions, including both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives aimed at fostering business growth. Additionally, the government encourages companies to develop captive power plants for their production needs.
The Ministry is committed to enabling open dialogue with the business community on policy, legal, and regulatory issues to unlock Zambia’s economic potential, according to Hon. Mulenga.
