President Hichilema Advocates for Climate-Smart Agriculture at Kulamba Traditional Ceremony
President Hakainde Hichilema attended the Kulamba Traditional Ceremony of the Chewa people as the guest of honor, where he emphasized the importance of food security and climate resilience.
The event, hosted by His Majesty Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi at Mkaika Palace, attracted the largest crowd in its history, uniting Chewa people from Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.
This year’s ceremony focused on the theme, “Ensuring Food Security by Adopting Climate Resilient and Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices,” aligning closely with the government’s priority on food security.
In his address, President Hichilema emphasized the critical need for unity and stability in achieving societal progress, particularly in the face of challenges such as drought, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cholera outbreak, which have strained Zambia’s resources.
President Hichilema announced government initiatives to address food insecurity through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
He also highlighted the need for innovation in water harvesting, precision irrigation, and the adoption of alternative energy sources, including solar and clean coal, to build resilience against future climatic challenges.
Furthermore, the President assured that the government would carefully consider the development needs presented by Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi, particularly for the Eastern Province, and take appropriate actions to address them.
The Kulamba Traditional Ceremony continues to serve as a powerful symbol of Chewa solidarity and cultural heritage, reinforcing the bonds between the three nations of Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.
