SADC to Host Climate Outlook Forum and Meteorology Sub-Committee Meeting in Zimbabwe
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will host the 29th Southern Africa Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-29) from August 26-28, 2024, followed by the SADC Sub-sectoral Committee Meeting (SCOM) on Meteorology on August 29-30, 2024, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
These events, organized under the EU-funded ClimSA programme, are crucial for the implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) in the SADC region. They will address the region’s climate challenges, including droughts, floods, and cyclones, by enhancing climate services to support decision-making.
The SARCOF-29 forum, themed “At the frontline of climate action towards improved climate services in the SADC Region,” will evaluate past seasons, identify climate variability patterns, and issue a rainfall outlook for the upcoming season.
This will help sectors like Water, Agriculture, Health, and Disaster Risk Reduction co-develop early warning advisories.
The SCOM meeting will focus on strengthening regional meteorological systems, reviewing policy frameworks, and advancing the SADC Protocol on Transport, Communications, and Meteorology.
Ahead of these meetings, a Climate Experts Meeting (CEM) will take place from August 19-25, 2024, to enhance forecasting capacities across the region. These events will gather climate scientists, researchers, policymakers, and development partners to exchange knowledge and discuss strategies for sustainable environmental management in the SADC region.
