Mopani Copper Mines Produces First 200 Tonnes of Copper Anodes After Revival
Mopani Copper Mines has successfully produced its first 200 tonnes of copper anodes since its revival under new equity partner, International Resources Holdings (IRH).
The company was handed over to IRH in March this year by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Mopani Copper Mines CEO Charles Sakanya announced significant transformations at the mining giant since its revival. Over the past three months, 400 professionals have been employed to boost productivity.
The mine has also doubled its shifts, leading to a surge in production. Current copper output stands at 65,000 tonnes, with plans to ramp up production to 225,000 tonnes under IRH’s management.
Speaking during a courtesy call by Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati on Mufulira District Commissioner Saboi Kabika, ahead of a graduation at Mopani Central Training Center, Mr. Sakanya revealed that full operations at the mine are expected to commence in October.
Minister Mutati praised Mopani’s management for revitalizing the mine, increasing productivity, and creating jobs. He highlighted that the payment of K220 million to contractors and suppliers has significantly boosted local income.
Mufulira District Commissioner Saboi Kabika expressed the community’s optimism, noting that the revival of Mopani Copper Mines has brought hope and renewed confidence among residents, with expectations of improved living standards in the town.
