Botswana Unearths Largest Diamond in Over a Century, Weighing 2,492 Carats
Botswana has once again made history in the diamond world with the discovery of a colossal 2,492-carat diamond at the Karowe Mine.
This is the largest diamond found in more than a century and the second-largest ever discovered, following the legendary 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond unearthed in South Africa in 1905.
The yet-to-be-named gem was revealed by President Mokgweetsi Masisi during a special viewing ceremony, where he expressed awe and pride at the find.
“I am lucky to have seen it in my time,” Masisi remarked, calling the event “overwhelming.” The diamond, weighing nearly half a kilogram, is a testament to Botswana’s leading role in the global diamond industry.
The Karowe Mine, operated by Lucara Diamond Corp., has been a treasure trove of extraordinary diamonds in recent years, including the Sewelo and Lesedi La Rona diamonds.
Lucara’s CEO, William Lamb, expressed elation at the discovery, calling the diamond “exceptional” and highlighting its intact, high-quality condition.
Botswana, the world’s second-largest producer of natural diamonds, continues to solidify its position as a powerhouse in the industry.
