FQM Champions Sustainable Energy Solutions at Energy Forum for Africa
At the Energy Forum for Africa Conference held in Lusaka, First Quantum Minerals (FQM) emphasized the critical need for dependable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for Zambia’s mining sector and national development. As a sponsor of the event, FQM engaged with public and private sector stakeholders to discuss the future of Zambia’s energy sector.
Jed Goldstein, FQM’s Infrastructure Lead for Zambia, highlighted the company’s commitment to Zambia’s energy sustainability, stating, “First Quantum Minerals recognizes that the future of Zambia’s development is closely tied to the sustainability and resilience of its energy sector. As the largest copper and nickel miner in Zambia, our operations are deeply integrated into the local economy. Dependable, affordable, and sustainable energy is essential not only for our industry but also for the nation.”
Amidst Zambia’s current energy deficits caused by El Niño-induced drought affecting hydropower generation, FQM underscored the importance of collaboration between the private sector, ZESCO, and the government.
Goldstein delivered two key presentations at the conference: one on “Global Energy Policies and Their Implications for Africa,” and another on FQM’s strategic initiatives to enhance Zambia’s energy infrastructure. His presentations detailed the company’s landmark Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with ZESCO and plans for a 430 MW solar and wind project led by TotalEnergies and Chariot.
Goldstein emphasized the critical role of copper and nickel in the global energy transition. “With the growing emphasis on renewable energy and the electrification of economies, the copper and nickel we produce here in Zambia are indispensable resources. For instance, an electric vehicle requires approximately four times more copper than a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle, and a single wind turbine can require up to 4.7 tonnes of copper,” he noted.
FQM’s substantial investment of over US$1.25 billion in the S3 expansion at the Kansanshi mine was also highlighted as a testament to their commitment to Zambia’s long-term growth.
Goldstein expressed confidence that with leadership from the Ministry of Energy and ZESCO, and through collective efforts, Zambia can build a more resilient energy sector that secures the country’s energy future.
Kelvin Bwalya, energy efficiency lead at FQM’s Trident operation, participated in a panel discussion on sustainable mining practices aligned with global decarbonization goals.
He shared that awareness programs, load management strategies, and small-scale projects have led to a significant energy saving of 2 GWh in just six months at Trident.
Bwalya reaffirmed FQM’s dedication to incorporating energy efficiency into its sustainable mining operations, especially crucial given the current energy crisis.
