Zambia and Sweden Forge Path to Climate Cooperation with Article 6 MoU
Zambia and Sweden have taken a significant step towards bolstering their climate cooperation with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The MoU, signed by Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) and the Swedish Energy Agency, marks the beginning of negotiations for a bilateral agreement aimed at fostering international cooperation for carbon credit transactions.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary of MGEE, and H.E Mr. Johan Hallenborg, Swedish Ambassador to Zambia. The agreement is supported by the SPAR6C program, which has been pivotal in providing technical assistance and building capacity to enhance Zambia’s readiness for Article 6 cooperation.
Article 6 of the Paris Agreement facilitates global carbon market mechanisms that support countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable development. This agreement represents a milestone in Zambia’s efforts to address its energy sector needs and align with global climate goals.
Swedish Ambassador Hallenborg highlighted the significance of the MoU, noting that Sweden’s support for Zambia through initiatives like the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa and the rehabilitation of the Kariba Dam underscores their commitment to climate cooperation.
He emphasized that the Swedish Energy Agency’s expertise will be instrumental in addressing Zambia’s specific energy and climate needs.
Dr. Chibamba expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, describing the MoU as the “first hint of a success story” for Article 6 cooperation between the two nations. He pointed out that this collaboration will drive sustainable energy solutions, contribute to Zambia’s energy security, and foster economic growth.
Ms. Caroline Asserup, Deputy Director General of the Swedish Energy Agency, affirmed the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change challenges.
She expressed pleasure in formalizing the collaboration, which aims to enhance Zambia’s capacity to engage in internationally transferable mitigation outcomes.
As part of their visit, Swedish officials will also tour Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation, Supa Moto, and the Kafue Sugar Project, further strengthening bilateral ties and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.
