Zambia and Stakeholders Address Triple Global Crisis of Fuel, Food, and Finance

The Zambian government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has convened a national workshop to tackle the triple global crisis of food, fuel, and finance, alongside the pressing issue of climate change.

The workshop, officially opened by Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami, marks a significant step towards the implementation of the UN’s three-year project aimed at addressing these crises.

The initiative, sponsored by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), is part of a broader UN project targeting six selected countries globally, with Zambia as a key participant.

The workshop, led by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and ECA, focuses on strengthening capacity for evidence-based social protection policies to mitigate the impacts of these global challenges on human development.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Kawandami emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing socioeconomic threats and developing policies that foster social protection and human development.

She acknowledged the UN’s role in supporting Zambia’s efforts and highlighted the importance of addressing poverty, vulnerability, and ensuring inclusive development for marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, women, youth, children, and rural populations.

Ms. Kawandami stressed the government’s dedication to creating a conducive environment for social protection, prioritizing health and education, and fostering partnerships between governments, the private sector, development partners, and affected populations.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Ms. Beatrice Muntali, represented by Peace and Development Advisor Ms. Noria Mashumba, commended Zambia’s progress in enhancing its social protection system.

She noted Zambia’s comprehensive and sustainable approach to social protection and praised the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services for its visionary leadership in expanding support to marginalized communities.
