SMART Zambia Institute Issues Ultimatum for ICT Professionals to Register with ICTAZ
The National Coordinator of the Electronic Government Division (SMART Zambia Institute), Mr. Percy Chinyama, has issued a firm directive for all ICT professionals in Zambia to register with the Information and Communication Technology Association of Zambia (ICTAZ) by the end of September 2024.
This ultimatum was announced during a joint ICTAZ-SMART Zambia press briefing held in Lusaka on August 20, 2024.
Mr. Chinyama emphasized that this mandate is in accordance with a pronouncement made in 2023 and is legally binding.
He revealed that SMART Zambia has already ensured the registration of over 400 ICT professionals within the central government with ICTAZ, underscoring the importance of maintaining professional standards in the ICT sector.
“ICTAZ plays a crucial role in setting and maintaining standards in the ICT industry, which is vital for ensuring professional stability and the provision of optimal services,” Mr. Chinyama stated.
He stressed that while technological advancements are essential, effective people management and adherence to high standards are equally important for the growth of the sector.
He also highlighted the need for greater collaboration between the government and the private sector to drive Zambia’s digital transformation.
This collaboration, Mr. Chinyama noted, should be built on dialogue, knowledge sharing, and mutual support, all of which are essential for achieving a fully digital Zambia.
Furthermore, Mr. Chinyama referenced a presidential pronouncement that emphasized the importance of growing Zambia’s economy in collaboration with small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
He pointed out the significant potential of ICT in supporting SME growth and creating jobs, reinforcing the sector’s role in national development.
At the same event, ICTAZ President Dr. Clement Sinyangwe acknowledged the efforts of SMART Zambia’s National Coordinator, Mr. Percy Chinyama, and his team in advancing the association’s goals and meeting public expectations.
Dr. Sinyangwe praised the Electronic Government Division’s achievements, including the successful implementation of systems, infrastructure development, and policy expansion, all of which have contributed to increased adoption of E-Government services and digital technology across Zambia.
Dr. Sinyangwe also called on ICTAZ members to convene and draft a constitution that aligns with the association’s aspirations.
He urged members to promote the development of innovative, responsible, and reputable ICT professionals, thereby enhancing the sector’s contribution to national development.
