President Hichilema Launches $600 Million Sinomine Kitumba Mining Project

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially inaugurated the $600 million Sinomine Kitumba mining project in Mumbwa District, Central Province, aiming to rejuvenate the country’s mining industry and drive economic growth.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, President Hichilema underscored the project’s pivotal role in copper cathode production, which will be complemented by the development of a 50-megawatt solar power plant integrated into Zambia’s national grid.

This ambitious project is set to generate over 2,500 direct and indirect jobs for locals, enhancing employment opportunities across various sectors.

“This investment will have far-reaching impacts across infrastructure, agriculture, education, and health, marking a new phase in our bilateral relations,” President Hichilema stated.

He called upon Members of Parliament, civic and traditional leaders, and other officials to ensure timely project completion.

Sinomine Kitumba’s CEO, Wang Pingwei, echoed the President’s optimism, revealing plans for further geological exploration to expand the copper resource base during construction. The solar power plant is also a key component of the project.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, praised President Hichilema for his decisive actions in revitalizing the mining sector and resolving previous investor disputes.

“Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to the President’s commitment to advancing our mineral-rich districts,” Mr. Kabuswe remarked.
