Kenya Airports Authority Readies for Strike Over JKIA Development Deal
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced comprehensive contingency plans to ensure the continued smooth operation of airports across the country as the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) threatens to go on strike starting Monday, August 19.
The union represents employees at airports and Kenya Airways and is protesting a proposed partnership with India’s Adani Airports Holdings to develop Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
The union, in a strike notice, expressed concerns that the deal might lead to job losses and the hiring of non-Kenyan workers, which they referred to as the “intended sale” of JKIA.
However, the Kenyan government has refuted these claims, stating that the airport is not for sale and that no final decision has been made regarding the public-private partnership aimed at upgrading Kenya’s largest airport.
In a statement on Friday, the KAA reassured the public that they have measures in place to prevent any disruptions to airport operations, even if the strike proceeds.
The authority highlighted that ongoing discussions involving the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, KAA Management, and KAWU aim to find a mutually beneficial resolution to the concerns raised by the union.
