Zanaco Launches Grassroots Soccer Tournament to Nurture Young Talent
The Zanaco Grassroots Soccer Tournament was officially launched today, marking a significant step towards fostering young football talent across Zambia. The event, held in Lusaka, was graced by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts, Mr. Elvis Nkandu, who commended Zanaco for its commitment to grassroots sports development.
In his address, Mr. Nkandu highlighted the importance of the tournament in providing opportunities for young athletes, especially within local communities.
“This initiative is a true reflection of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the country provides recreational activities that foster talent identification and enable the young generation to explore their potential in sporting activities, including football,” said the Minister.
The tournament is part of Zanaco’s 55th-anniversary celebrations, which are being held under the theme “Zanaco Cares.” This initiative underscores the bank’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and its role in promoting youth sports development at the grassroots level.
Mr. Nkandu urged the Ministry of Education to support the programme by providing the necessary infrastructure and personnel to ensure its success. He also called for the inclusion of young people who are out of school, particularly those living on the streets.
The Minister expressed his desire to see the revival of school football tournaments, reminiscing about similar events in the 1970s and 1980s that kept the youth engaged in productive activities.
“To Zanaco PLC, I say thank you for ensuring that this dream has been turned into reality, and I look forward to the sustainability of the programme,” he added.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Kangwa Chileshe, and the Zanaco Interim Board Chairperson, Mrs. Regina Mulenga, among others.
The launch represents a significant collaboration between Zanaco, the government, and the wider community, all working together to harness the power of sports for youth development and national growth.
As the tournament kicks off, young footballers across Zambia are set to showcase their skills, with hopes of being recognised for national and international opportunities.
“I wish all the participants of the Zanaco Grassroots Soccer Tournament the best of luck and urge them to compete with passion, sportsmanship, and respect,” Mr. Nkandu concluded.
