Lusaka Mayor Expresses Concern Over Rising HIV Infections Among Youth
The Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, has voiced her concern over the alarming rise in HIV infections among adolescents and young people in the city.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, 11,878 out of the 23,000 new HIV infections recorded in 2023 were among young people, highlighting a significant public health challenge.
Speaking through John Howard Ward 3 Councillor Ponsilio Phiri at the HIV Testing, Counselling, and Treatment Day (HCTD) event held at Chawama Grounds, Ms. Chitangala described the statistics as deeply concerning.
She urged the youth to either abstain from sexual activity or practice safe sex to curb the spread of the virus.
The Mayor also stressed the importance of getting tested for HIV, noting that it is not only a medical procedure but also an act of self-care and empowerment.
“Getting tested is a crucial step in building a foundation for a healthier and more resilient community,” she said, encouraging those who may already have been exposed to the virus to seek testing and treatment promptly.
The HCTD event, themed “Free Your Mind! Test For HIV Today #Secure Your Future,” aimed to raise awareness and encourage young people to take proactive steps in managing their sexual health.
