President Hichilema Launches 300MW Thermal Power Plant
President Hakainde Hichilema has inaugurated the construction of a new 300MW thermal power plant by Maamba Energy Ltd, marking a significant stride towards bolstering Zambia’s energy security. The groundbreaking ceremony, held yesterday, represents a pivotal development in the country’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and address the ongoing energy deficit.
During his speech, President Hichilema underscored the critical importance of this project in reducing Zambia’s reliance on a single energy source. He referenced the recent drought that dramatically reduced the country’s hydropower capacity by nearly 80%, highlighting the need for a more resilient energy mix.
“This project is a testament to the shared responsibility between the government and stakeholders in securing our energy future,” stated President Hichilema. “It reflects our collective determination to overcome the challenges that have hindered our progress for too long.”
The President called on the people of Maamba and the wider Zambian population to support this initiative, emphasising the vital role of community involvement in achieving energy security. He reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing climate-resilient electricity generation technologies, including solar, wind, geothermal, and coal.
President Hichilema also assured the public that coal generation at Maamba Energy would be conducted under the highest environmental standards. He expressed optimism that the project would be completed on schedule, significantly contributing to Zambia’s energy infrastructure.
The 300MW plant forms part of a broader strategy to enhance Zambia’s energy resilience and ensure a reliable power supply for the future. The Phase II expansion of the Maamba Energy Ltd project, a joint venture between ZCCM-IH (35%) and Nava Bharat (65%), is scheduled for completion by July 2026, with a total investment of USD 400 million.
ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Mr Kakenenwa Muyangwa, commended Maamba Energy Ltd for its environmental stewardship, particularly in its use of low-grade coal, previously considered waste, in the production of thermal power.
He praised the company’s efforts to mitigate environmental impact through advanced technology and robust rehabilitation initiatives, including extensive tree planting in mined-out areas.
Mr Muyangwa also highlighted ZCCM-IH’s ongoing commitment to investing in the energy sector, noting a USD 35 million equity contribution towards the Phase II project and a potential USD 15 million loan. He lauded Maamba Energy Ltd’s operations as a model for sustainable practices worldwide.
