Zambia’s Ministry of Finance Releases K16.8 Billion for July 2024 Developmental Programmes

In July 2024, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning disbursed K16.8 billion to fund various developmental programmes and general public service delivery. 

The allocation underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting key sectors and driving national development.

A substantial portion of the funds, K4.1 billion, was allocated to the Public Service Wage Bill, ensuring the timely payment of salaries and allowances for civil servants, including health workers, teachers, and Zambian diplomats stationed abroad.

Debt servicing and arrears settlement accounted for K4.3 billion, with K3.1 billion dedicated to domestic debt service, K321.1 million for external debt service, and K883.8 million earmarked for clearing outstanding arrears. This aligns with the government’s focus on reducing national indebtedness and improving fiscal stability.

Transfers and subsidies received K5.6 billion, facilitating essential services across various sectors. Key allocations included K494.4 million for grants to schools to support free education, K358.9 million for hospital operations, K241.5 million for the Local Government Equalization Fund, and K145.4 million for universities and student loans. Additionally, K2.4 billion was directed to the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP), while the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) received K1.7 billion to bolster food security.

Government operations were also bolstered with K1.8 billion to support the implementation of various programmes. This included K300 million for procuring drugs and medical supplies and K111.9 million for donor-funded initiatives.

Capital expenditure was another focal point, with K968.1 million invested in critical infrastructure. Of this, K381 million was allocated for road infrastructure, K345 million for medical equipment and facilities, K122.5 million for school infrastructure, and K118.6 million for other government projects.
