Kenya’s Aviation Union to Strike Over Jomo Kenyatta Airport Privatization Plan
Kenya’s Workers Aviation Union (KAWU) has announced plans to strike starting next Monday in protest against a proposal to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to a private operator.
The union, representing airport workers, argues that the deal, announced last month with India’s Adani Airport Holdings, could lead to job losses and has called on the government to abandon what it describes as an “unlawful intended sale” of the airport.
The strike is expected to cause significant disruption to Kenya Airways, the national carrier, and operations at JKIA, which is a major hub for African travel.
The government has responded by stating that the airport is not for sale, clarifying that the proposal is part of a “public-private partnership” aimed at upgrading the airport’s infrastructure, including the construction of a second runway and enhancements to the passenger terminal.
Kenya’s Airports Authority expressed hope that a resolution with the union could be reached through negotiations before the strike begins.
