Zambia Temporarily Closes Copperbelt Borders with DR Congo
The Zambian government has announced the temporary closure of all three major border crossings with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the Copperbelt, citing concerns for safety and property protection amidst ongoing protests in the neighbouring country.
The affected borders include Kasumbalesa, Mokambo, and Sakania, which are crucial points of trade between the two nations.
Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga confirmed the decision, stating that the move is intended to safeguard Zambian citizens and assets due to the unrest in the DRC.
The protests in the DRC have erupted over the past ten days in response to the Congolese government’s recent ban on lime and beverage imports, which has led to widespread dissatisfaction and disruption.
Minister Mulenga assured the public that the Zambian government is closely monitoring the situation and will engage with DRC authorities to explore potential solutions to the crisis.
He urged patience from Zambian drivers and citizens, acknowledging that the border closures may lead to traffic congestion and delays in the affected areas.
“The safety of our people and the protection of our national property are our top priorities. We are in contact with our counterparts in the DRC to find a resolution, but until then, the Kasumbalesa, Mokambo, and Sakania borders will remain closed,” Mulenga told ZNBC News in Kasama.
The government’s decision is expected to have significant implications for cross-border trade and could further strain relations between Zambia and the DRC.
The duration of the closure is yet to be determined, pending developments in the ongoing discussions between the two countries.
