Govt Urges Continued Support for Mining Sector, Says Minister Kabuswe
Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, MP, has emphasised the need for continued backing and collaboration in the mining sector.
Speaking in Lusaka on 9th August, Minister Kabuswe highlighted the Government’s commitment, alongside key stakeholders, to fully map Zambia’s geological landscape—a crucial step in combating illegal mining and uncovering untapped mineral resources.
Currently, only 49 percent of the country is mapped, a challenge the Minister noted has exacerbated illegal mining activities. Once the full mapping is achieved, the Government will gain access to critical geological data, aiding efforts to curb illegal activities and identify unexploited minerals.
Minister Kabuswe also expressed the Government’s appreciation for the ongoing cooperation between Zambia and the European Union (EU). He reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to overcoming the various challenges facing the mining sector.
The Minister made these remarks during a courtesy call from an EU delegation led by Senior Adviser Henrik Hololei. Mr. Hololei praised the partnership between Zambia and the EU on critical raw minerals, which he believes will significantly benefit the country.
He mentioned that the Finnish Geological Survey Department is collaborating with Ministry of Mines officers to ensure the success of the ongoing aerial surveys. These surveys are expected to foster skills transfer, technological advancement, and stability for future generations.
On 16th May 2024, the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development signed a contract with Xcalibur for the provision of nationwide airborne geological services in Zambia.
