Zambia to Transform Water and Sanitation with $19.25 Million Boost
Over 460,000 Zambians in Kabwe and Bauleni are set to benefit from improved access to clean water and sanitation thanks to a $13.2 million loan from the African Development Fund.
The project, backed by a €6.05 million grant from the European Union, aims to enhance water quality, expand coverage, and strengthen community resilience to climate change.
The African Development Bank will invest in rehabilitating the Mulungushi water purification plant in Kabwe, boosting daily drinking water production to 37,500 cubic metres.
Additionally, the project will extend water distribution networks by over 70 kilometres and construct five new boreholes. To reduce operational costs, renewable energy technology and smart meters will be implemented.
Partnering with UNICEF, the initiative will also focus on raising awareness about hygiene, nutrition, and climate resilience among 10,000 people. The African Development Bank has a long-standing commitment to Zambia’s water sector, having supported 14 projects since the late 1970s.
Raubil Durowoju, the Bank’s Country Office Head in Zambia, emphasised the project’s dual objectives of improving water and sanitation services while increasing the efficiency of water providers in Lukanga and Lusaka.
