UN’s First Paperless Exhibition Marks World Press Freedom Day 2024 in Tanzania

The United Nations celebrated World Press Freedom Day 2024 with its inaugural paperless exhibition in Dodoma, Tanzania. This landmark event, held under the theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” was collaboratively led by UNESCO and highlighted the essential role of journalism while promoting environmentally responsible practices.

The decision to host a paperless exhibition reflected the UN’s dedication to reducing carbon footprints and adopting digital solutions. This pioneering step marks a significant shift towards greener practices in event management and sets a precedent for future UN initiatives in Tanzania.

The exhibition provided a dynamic platform for journalists, media professionals, environmental activists, and policymakers to discuss strategies for addressing environmental challenges through journalism.

Panels and discussions focused on how media can raise awareness, advocate for policy change, and engage the public on issues such as biodiversity loss, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.

A poignant spoken poetry performance by Tanzanian artist Mrisho Mpoto highlighted the importance of press freedom and the safety of journalists in shedding light on crucial issues.

During the World Press Freedom Day celebrations, UNESCO in Tanzania launched the ‘This Story Must Be Told’ campaign, underscoring the vital role of journalists and photojournalists in revealing important environmental stories.

The exhibition featured interactive digital QR code displays that replaced traditional printed materials, allowing visitors to explore the UN’s work through engaging digital experiences and data visualizations.

Various UN agencies, including the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, and UNHCR, showcased their contributions to Tanzania’s environmental efforts.

The digital displays provided insights into complex environmental issues and solutions, fostering discussions on how technology and digital platforms can enhance environmental journalism.

Hon. Neema Lugangira, Member of Parliament of Tanzania, demonstrated the interactive QR code displays to youth, showcasing how to access information and resources at the exhibition.
