World Bank Reaffirms Support to Zambia’s Social Protection Programs

World Bank Managing Director Mr. Wencai Zhang has reaffirmed the Bank’s support to Zambia in improving the livelihoods of vulnerable and poor people.

During his visit to Chibombo District, Mr. Zhang expressed satisfaction with the implementation of social protection programs in Zambia, particularly those supported by the World Bank such as the Social Cash Transfer, Supporting Women’s Livelihoods, and Keeping Girls in School initiatives.

“These programs are crucial for providing assistance and opportunities to those who need it most, contributing significantly to poverty reduction and socio-economic development in Zambia,” Mr. Zhang stated.

He highlighted the effectiveness of these programs, noting the various income-generating activities that beneficiaries are engaged in as evidence of their impact. “The Zambian Government should continue investing in people,” he emphasized.

The Social Cash Transfer program provides financial aid to vulnerable households, while the Supporting Women’s Livelihoods initiative empowers women through skills training and business support.

The Keeping Girls in School program aims to reduce dropout rates by addressing barriers to education for young girls.

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s support, particularly its importance during periods of hardship, such as the current drought affecting a large portion of Zambia’s population.

“We pledge to continue working tirelessly for the good of our people,” Ms. Kawandami said.

Mr. Zhang’s visit underscores the collaborative efforts between Zambia and the World Bank in addressing social challenges and promoting sustainable development in the country.

He is in Zambia to monitor various projects supported by the World Bank, reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s development agenda.
