President Hichilema Reinforces Commitment to Education Transformation
President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to investing in and transforming the education sector, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering human development and economic growth.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) delegation at State House, President Hichilema underscored education as a top priority for his administration. He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at expanding access to quality education across Zambia.
“Our administration is dedicated to expanding the education sector to ensure more learners have access to quality education,” President Hichilema stated, expressing gratitude to ADEA for their continuous efforts in improving educational policies and investments across Africa.
President Hichilema cited the introduction of free education and the substantial increase in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to promote skills training as critical steps towards enhancing educational opportunities. The CDF was boosted from K1.6 million to K30.6 million to support vocational training in fields such as plumbing, carpentry, and tailoring.
Recognizing the importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in education, President Hichilema advocated for its integration, highlighting the installation of a digital learning hub by Huawei at Muchila Combined School in Namwala District as a positive step. He called for the expansion of such initiatives nationwide to enhance ICT literacy among students.
Early childhood education also received special attention from President Hichilema, who emphasized its foundational role in shaping future learners. He pledged to ensure that every child has access to early childhood education to facilitate their holistic development.
Albert Nsengiyumvwa, Executive Secretary of ADEA, commended President Hichilema’s leadership and the introduction of progressive policies in Zambia’s education sector. He noted the country’s growing reputation for its commitment to educational excellence.
“Our visit aims to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to address challenges and enhance education standards across Zambia,” Mr. Nsengiyumvwa affirmed, stressing the importance of regional cooperation in advancing educational reforms.
ADEA, a continental platform comprising policymakers and stakeholders, focuses on supporting African countries in improving their education systems to drive sustainable economic growth.
President Hichilema concluded by reaffirming his administration’s resolve to transform the education sector despite challenges such as the ongoing drought crisis, emphasizing education as a fundamental pillar for Zambia’s economic development.
