Immigration Operations in Lusaka, Chipata, and Katete Result in 62 Arrests and 50 Repatriations

The Department of Immigration has apprehended 62 suspected illegal immigrants in a series of operations carried out between July 12th and 15th, 2024, in Lusaka, Chipata, and Katete. These operations have intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration across the country.

On July 15th, 31 individuals were apprehended in Lusaka during an operation covering Middle West, Garden House, Mumbwa Road, and Kanyama. Those detained included 20 Burundians, eight Congolese, two Egyptians, and one Tanzanian. 

Additionally, on July 14th, 17 Malawians were arrested in Chipata’s East Rise area in a coordinated operation with other security agencies. The same day, 14 more Malawians were apprehended by the Katete Immigration Office at an immigration checkpoint along the Great East Road for illegal entry, having failed to produce valid travel documents.

These operations have brought the total number of apprehensions for various immigration offenses between July 12th and 15th to 114 nationwide.

In another incident, the Kapiri Mposhi Magistrate Court on July 12th convicted and sentenced Kazzashim Kuzasuwat, a 30-year-old Nigerian Information Technology Specialist, to a fine of K 20,000 or, in default, 12 months of simple imprisonment for unlawful stay. 

Kuzasuwat was apprehended on July 9th at the Luanshimba Checkpoint along the Great North Road after failing to produce documentation legalizing his stay in Zambia. This brings the total number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration during this period to 28.

Furthermore, the Department of Immigration has received 50 more Zambians who were removed from neighboring countries for committing various offenses. 

On July 15th, 49 Zambians, including 30 males, 11 females, and eight minors, were received at Katima Mulilo Border Control for illegal entry and unlawful stay in Namibia. Another Zambian was received at Kasumbalesa Border Control on July 12th after being removed by Congolese authorities for illegal entry and unlawful stay.

Additionally, between July 12th and 15th, the Department of Immigration removed 49 illegal immigrants from Zambia and refused entry to seven individuals who failed to meet the entry requirements.
