Govt of Zambia and UNODC Collaborate to Strengthen Asset Recovery Efforts
Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha underscored the pivotal role of asset recovery in the global fight against corruption during the inauguration of a three-day workshop on asset management in Lusaka.
The workshop, a joint initiative by the Zambian government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aims to align national laws on forfeited asset management with international standards.
Kabesha emphasized that asset recovery serves as a potent tool to redirect recovered resources into developmental projects while preventing criminals from benefiting from their unlawful activities.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to legal reforms aimed at enhancing asset management practices in Zambia.
Speaking at the event, UNODC’s National Project Manager, Liya Tembo, commended Zambia for its strides in asset recovery, citing the successful seizure of a wide array of assets as a significant milestone.
The workshop convened experts and stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for effective asset management, crucial for sustainable socio-economic development.
Nsandi Manza, Acting Secretary to the Treasury, expressed appreciation to the Inter-Agency Framework for their efforts in advancing the asset management bill, poised to further bolster Zambia’s capacity in asset management upon enactment.
