Zambia to Launch AI Strategy on Independence Day

Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, has announced that Zambia’s much-anticipated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy will be officially launched on Independence Day this year.

The strategy aims to mark Zambia’s 60th anniversary with a leap into the future, positioning AI as a cornerstone of the nation’s economic growth and efficiency.

Speaking at the Corporate Governance Conference and Gala Awards organized by the Institute of Directors in Livingstone, Minister Mutati highlighted the transformative potential of AI in enhancing productivity and efficiency across sectors.

“Artificial Intelligence has come to promote productivity and efficiency. It has not come to take away jobs, but to enhance your work,” stated Minister Mutati, underscoring the strategy’s focus on leveraging AI for national development.

Mutati disclosed that the Zambian government has collaborated with international partners, including the Tony Blair Institute and the Finnish Government, to develop the AI Strategy. This initiative is expected to set a new trajectory for Zambia’s economic landscape, emphasizing innovation and technology-driven solutions.

In addition to the AI Strategy, Mutati revealed government plans to introduce a Start-Up Bill aimed at fostering entrepreneurship in Zambia. The bill includes provisions for establishing a Venture Capital Fund to support emerging businesses, further catalyzing economic growth and job creation.

Meanwhile, Institute of Directors President Edward Kabwe expressed gratitude for government support in approving the Institute of Directors Bill, highlighting its significance in promoting corporate governance.

Kabwe noted ongoing efforts to enhance board effectiveness through collaborations with the public sector and initiatives like the Memorandum of Understanding with the Industrial Development Corporation.

In recognition of his contributions to corporate leadership, Hon. Felix Mutati was conferred with Honourary Membership of the Institute of Directors.
