Tshisekedi and Lourenço Meeting Paves Way for Peace Talks with Kagame to Resolve Eastern DR Congo Crisis

Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi has taken a pivotal step towards restoring peace in eastern DR Congo by meeting Angolan President João Lourenço. 

The meeting occurred on June 30, 2024, during the 64th independence day celebrations of the DRC.

This significant encounter is seen as a precursor to an upcoming meeting between Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, aiming to negotiate an end to the longstanding tensions between their countries.

President Lourenço, appointed by the African Union (AU) as the facilitator of peace in the DRC, expressed his firm commitment to intensifying peace efforts in the region. 

Eastern Congo has been beset by insecurity for several years, and the international community is eager to see a resolution.

Tshisekedi welcomed Lourenço’s dedication to peace and development. The discussions are expected to pave the way for a scheduled meeting with Kagame in the coming weeks.

The Kinshasa meeting, coupled with numerous messages of support from the international community, provides a glimmer of hope for the future stability and prosperity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
