Court Orders Forfeiture of Charity Katanga’s Buses and Funds Deemed Proceeds of Crime

The Lusaka Magistrate Court has ordered the forfeiture of ten Higer buses and funds totaling K1,522,005.00, belonging to former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ms. Charity Katanga.

The court’s decision follows a Conviction-Based Forfeiture application by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and is in accordance with Section 10 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.

The forfeited assets, valued at USD 2,030,000.00, were held in the Chibeka Express Limited Account. Ms. Katanga was found to have acquired these assets, deemed proceeds of crime, between January 1, 2017, and June 6, 2022, while acting with unknown accomplices in Lusaka Province.

The forfeiture underscores the Zambian Criminal Justice System’s dedication to combating economic and financial crimes and demonstrates effective inter-agency collaboration among Law Enforcement Agencies and the National Prosecution Authority (NPA).

Allan Tamba, Public Relations Officer for the DEC, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for criminal activities and ensuring that assets obtained through illegal means are reclaimed for the public’s benefit.
