ZUPED Urges Vedanta Resources to Uphold Zambian Laws Following KCM Takeover
The Zambians for Unity Peace and Development (ZUPED) has called on Vedanta Resources to adhere to Zambian laws now that they have regained control of Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM).
Following the approval of a scheme of arrangement by the Lusaka High Court, ZUPED President Ronnie Jere emphasised the importance of Vedanta respecting labor and environmental laws as they assume operations at KCM.
Speaking to journalists in Lusaka, Jere highlighted the need for the mining giant to operate within the framework of Zambia’s legal framework.
“Now that Vedanta has officially taken over KCM, it is crucial that they respect Zambia’s labor laws,” Jere stated. “We urge the firm to also comply with Zambia’s environmental laws and conduct their mining activities accordingly.”
Jere further urged Vedanta to prioritize the employment of Zambians in key positions within KCM.
He expressed optimism that the local business community would benefit from opportunities as suppliers and contractors to the mine.
