Strong Partnerships Key to Overcoming Climate Change Challenges, Says Minister Mposha

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Mposha, has emphasized the importance of strong partnerships in tackling the formidable challenges posed by climate change.

Speaking during a courtesy call by World Bank Country Manager for Zambia, Eastern and Southern Africa Region, Mr. Achim Fock, Hon. Mposha highlighted the significant impact of the Bank’s support on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in Zambia.

Hon. Mposha praised the World Bank’s assistance in policy development and project implementation, which he described as crucial for advancing the country’s climate change initiatives.

“The support from the Bank has been instrumental, particularly with projects such as the Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project (ZIFLP), which transitioned into the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP) earlier this year. Additionally, the Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development (TRALARD) project in Northern Zambia has been a significant contributor to our climate adaptation and mitigation practices,” he said.

The Minister also mentioned future projects in the pipeline, including the Sustainable Management of Ecosystems in the Miombo Eco-regions of Zambia.

He noted that a recent field mission with the World Bank has led to the development of a project proposal, which is expected to be approved by the end of the year.

“It is my firm belief that by working together as a team, we can accelerate our efforts to bring sustainable development to the people of Zambia. The challenges posed by climate change are formidable, but with partners like yourselves, I am confident that we can overcome them and create a more resilient and prosperous Zambia,” Hon. Mposha stated.

In response, Mr. Achim Fock commended the Zambian Government and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment for their commitment to the green agenda, particularly in the face of extreme weather events.

He reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting the government’s priority areas related to climate change and environmental sustainability through ongoing projects and analytical work.

“The Bank is dedicated to furthering the climate change and environmental sustainability agenda in Zambia. We applaud the government’s efforts in promoting sustainable economic growth and development, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration,” Mr. Fock said.
